Ferales 31:11

about

Ferales is a custom surround sound piece for Trinidad Metz Brea sculptures exhibition at Aura Gallery in Buenos Aires.

There is that end of the world fueled by no-future theories of contemporary extractive capitalism, apocalyptic-financial speculation, and the agents of collapse. It is the one that, in the face of the climate and social crisis, physical and cultural wars, and neocolonial economies that squeeze and displace human and non-human bodies, suggests that we agonize in the paralysis of an eternal presentism. This end of the world, driven by Western modern thought, compels crowds to withdraw into themselves, taking refuge in the universe of the self-determined and individualistic subject that asserts itself against any social will representing a difference. There, agency is only possible through the separation of the individual from their natural and constructed environments.

However, in an uncertain and undated future, there is also another end of the world, a landscape still in flames where life, despite everything, continues. Here lies Ferales, a fugitive territory built on fantastic juxtapositions between past and present, the near and the far, the large and the small, danger and dystopia, emerging from the potential of what subsists/resists: a plant, a slug, a seed, a bulldozer. From these material encounters arise new bodies and a poetics of transition for a world ravaged by climate, a kind of threshold where catastrophe and freedom converge to ignite ecological and political imagination.

Immersed in this climatic fiction, explore the ecological worlds that emerge when non-human entities entangle with human infrastructure projects, and the Kantian-Western subject becomes a multi-relational being, blurring the difference, making it a porous and drooling interaction between inside and outside. Worlds where organisms reproduce constitutively. Its scenes of copulation, death, and more-than-human motherhood suggest a resource for hope rooted in a possible human evolution heading towards posthuman bodies and subjectivities.

Ferales thus begets unrestrained lives, which in their multiplicity and monstrosity cannot be easily reduced, divided, or conquered. In that swampy territory of production and reproduction, the figure of a posthuman agency (or the most human of all) finally emerges from the cultivation of vital forms of recognition and response to the urgent challenges of the present. An agency that overflows the realization of some essentialist self, giving rise to tentacular subjectivities and metamorphic becomings. - Curator, Sofía Dourron
